Walton Park

In a historic move at the dawn of 2020, the Town of Mineral bestowed ownership of Walton Park upon the esteemed Mineral Volunteer Fire Department. This transfer marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter, with the Fire Department assuming full responsibility for the park's upkeep and operations.

Delving into its rich history reveals a tale of community spirit and perseverance. Originally owned by the esteemed Senator H. H. and Elizabeth Trice Walton, the land served humble beginnings as a town dump in the 1950s. However, a visionary idea took root during a pivotal meeting in 1965 between town luminaries Peyton Noel and Goodman Duke. Inspired by Noel's aspiration to develop the land for charitable purposes, Mrs. Trice generously deeded the property to the fire department. While the fire department couldn't hold the title due to its unincorporated status at the time, the land found its home under the guardianship of the town.

Fuelled by dedication, the founding members of the Mineral Volunteer Fire Department toiled tirelessly to ready the land for its noble purpose. Their efforts culminated in the renowned Mineral Horse Show, a cherished annual tradition spanning from 1965 to 1981. Building upon this success, the iconic Mineral Bluegrass Festival graced the park from 1983 to 2016, drawing crowds from far and wide to revel in its music and merriment.

Over the years, Walton Park evolved into a bustling hub of community activity. It played host to an array of events, from the spirited LCHS homecoming parade to the soulful melodies of Louisa County Parks and Recreation's summer music soirées. Easter egg hunts, charity walks, and fundraising galas further enriched the park's tapestry, weaving bonds that transcended generations.

Looking ahead, the Mineral Volunteer Fire Department embarks on a visionary journey to enhance Walton Park's allure. Plans are underway to bolster safety measures and introduce captivating attractions, ensuring a haven of enjoyment for all. Additionally, the park and its charming pavilion will be available for rental, promising unforgettable experiences for private events and celebrations.

As Walton Park continues to flourish under the stewardship of the Mineral Volunteer Fire Department, it remains a testament to the enduring spirit of community and the boundless potential of shared dreams.
